National Needs Assessment of Educational Media and Materials for the Handicapped. Volume 6, Section III: Training in the Use of Special Education Media and Materials.
Vale, Carol A.; And Others
Volume 6 of a nine volume report on a national survey (33 states) of the instructional media and materials needs of special education teachers and students presents a statistical analysis of the questionnaire items on training in the use of special education media and materials. This section of the questionnaire contained items regarding sources of information about training opportunities, obstacles to acquiring further training, means of making training needs known, role and value of packaged training kits, skills which are critical to the special educator's job, sources of previous training in those skills, highest priorities for future training, and the best source of training for those skills. The analysis is presented three times for each respondent population, first for the total respondent population and then for two subgroups (public or nonpublic in the case of teachers and supervisors or other special education personnel for that respondent group). A demographic description of each respondent group precedes the analysis for that group. Sample findings for the group of all teachers of the handicapped combined were that workshops and conferences were the source of most of their information about training opportunities and that insufficient released time was a major obstacle to acquiring media and materials training. Nonteaching personnel reported that their most valuable resources for training teachers in media and materials skills were the instructional materials collection itself and visiting model programs.
