Statewide information about the performance of Massachusetts' grade 12 students in listening and speaking is presented for the 1979-80 school year. A total of 2,207 students were tested by listening to material on a tape recording and then answering multiple-choice questions about what they heard. The performance of students in listening is presented for each item and is summarized across all items. Performance is also summarized by type of listening skill and by type of listening situation. A total of 691 students were tested in two parts by: (1) two teachers independently rating a student's speaking performance from their observations during normal classroom activity; and (2) a trained rater assessing the student's speaking performance in a one-on-one situation during several specific speaking tasks. The performance of students in speaking is presented for each teacher observation and each one-on-one speaking rating, as well as a summary of all ratings. In addition, results from background questionnaires which included questions about general school and student characteristics are presented in an effort to amplify and explain the results of the skills assessments.
