Individualized Degree Program Student Handbook.
Hagan, Jan
Procedures, requirements, and forms are presented in this handbook designed to guide students through Whatcom Community College's (WCC's) Individualized Degree Program. After introductory material concerning degree requirements and application procedures, the handbook considers the objectives and outcomes of initial advising sessions in which the student, together with a degree advisor, defines educational and personal goals, identifies the learning experiences encountered outside of college, and outlines the learning activities he/she would like to pursue. Following an enumeration of the credit courses offered to help students evaluate alternative learning opportunities and plan individualized degree programs, an outline is presented of the format required for students' degree plans. On standardized forms, students are required to present for Degree Advisory Committee approval, the name of their degree and major, a statement of degree goals, a narrative rationale for choosing those goals, an outline of the courses to be taken, and the learning methods involved in each course. Sample degree program proposals are presented, along with a discussion of the role of the Content Specialist, an expert in the student's area of concentration who, with the degree advisor, helps the student draft a formal degree proposal. An explanation of the degree approval process concludes the handbook. (JP)
