Foreign Students at American Colleges: Guidelines for Minimal Competencies in Speech Communication.
Richard, Dinah Daniel
Noting the growing number of foreign students in colleges in the United States, this paper argues that communication educators should devote more discussion to the development of oral proficiency in those students. This paper (1) discusses the significance of the problem facing educators and foreign students, (2) examines the language training of foreign students prior to their admission to colleges in the U. S., (3) presents guidelines for minimal competencies in speaking and listening that can be used as a basis for a communication course for foreign students, and (4) illustrates how the guidelines can be applied.
