Volunteer Tutorial Program: A Guide for Administration.
Hall, Lee E.
To provide assistance to South Carolina schools in developing volunteer tutorial programs, the Competency Testing Project at Winthrop College created this manual on program development. This manual is designed to be duplicated and disseminated to coordinators and tutors; and although designed for an elementary school program, it can be used as a guide for district-wide replication with minor modifications. Included are the Administrator's Guide, Coordinator's Manual, and Handbook for Volunteer Tutors. The necessary steps for developing a volunteer program are discussed: (1) determine needs of the school; (2) establish goals and objectives; (3) obtain administrative approval; (4) select a coordinator; (5) plan preservice and inservice training; (6) provide inservice training for teachers; (7) recruit and screen volunteers; (8) provide preservice training for volunteers; (9) select students; (10) implement tutorial program; (11) provide periodic inservice for tutors and teachers; and, (12) evaluate the program and modify as necessary.
