Individualized Competency-Based Programming for Parents of Young Handicapped Children: Project KIDS.
Parker, Jenni
Project KIDS, an early intervention program for handicapped children which emphasizes parent involvement, is described. The project identified basic competencies for parenting developmentally delayed children. Fourteen top rated competencies were included on the Parent Self Appraisal Inventory (PSAI) which was administered to 92 parents. Results showed high agreement between parents of the younger children and parents of the older children in the identification of needs and strengths. In the selection of activities, the most popular categories were reading books and performing other individual tasks. Subject areas most frequently selected for group meetings included language acquisition, normal child development, and children's behavior. A sample PSAI is included in appended material. (CL)
