Competence Is for Everyone. Unit 4: Competence
Kent, Martha Whalen; Kent, Dale
These materials are part of a four-module series, "Competence Is for Everyone," designed to specify and reduce limitations on the learning and use of skills that people experience because of their sex or race. The series identifies three areas that function to maintain inequalities: the process of making judgments or appraisals, practices of social institutions in education, employment, and the mass media, and legal precedents and historical antecedents. Appraisal is treated as it occurs with respect to group membership, i.e., sex and minority status. This module, written for students at the upper grade-level, reviews the concept of appraisal through activities focused on: (1) identifying person and task appraisals; (2) reviewing the bases of job assignments; (3) designing a stereotype-free environment; and (4) developing personal strategies for overcoming sexual and racial bias. Additionally, a teacher's guide with instructions and worksheets accompanies this student text. (Author/HLM)
