Community mental health curriculum in schools of social work education is discussed. The contents are compiled from a series of empirical studies, interviews, and meetings with social work faculty and students, and from analyses of curriculum materials as part of a three-year study conducted by the Council on Social Work Education. Chapter 1 discusses the domain of the community mental health field, including the community mental health centers and center programs, the 1975 amendments, and implications for social work education. In Chapter 2 the curriculum study and its findings are summarized. Issues examined include: mental health concepts in the social work curriculum, teaching-learning patterns, class-field experiences, and alternative curriculum models and innovations. Specific curriculum innovations implemented at the following schools of social work are discussed in Chapter 3: University of Chicago, Simmons College, New York University, West Virginia University, University of Kentucky, Florida State University, and the University of Michigan. Recommendations for future directions of social work education are included. It is suggested that there is a need to delineate the boundaries between community mental health curriculum and the rest of the social work curriculum. It is also recommended that guidelines be developed regarding the selection of field practicum settings available to social work students. An extensive bibliography is provided, along with names of the members of the Advisory Committee to the Community Mental Health Curriculum Project and participating schools and faculty liaisons. (SF)
