Establishing an Alternative Suspension Program.
Beaman, Philip L.
An alarming rate of out-of-school suspensions prompted the establishment of an alternative program for students at Tarboro High School, Tarboro, North Carolina. The internal suspension program was instituted to reduce school suspensions and improve the academic performance of suspended students. The program utilized a full-time detention center located in the school and coordinated by an internal suspension coordinator. The program was considered highly successful in reducing the number of out-of-school suspensions and moderately successful in improving the academic performance of students assigned to the internal suspension program.
