Staff Development at Metro Tech Community College.
Skobjak, Bernadette L.; And Others
Definitions, purposes, and goals are enumerated to provide a planning framework for the creation of a staff development plan at Metro Tech Community College (MTCC). After introductory material outlines the planning process for staff development and the steps in an informal assessment of staff development needs, an operational definition is provided which identifies staff development as the systematic flow of learning experiences to promote the achievement of broad professional and personal goals. Principles of staff development are then outlined, stressing the participation of the individual in planning his/her program, and the importance of wide participation and consideration of individual as well as institutional needs in program development. An examination of the major purposes of the plan precedes a discussion of the four areas in which learning experiences and activities are to be planned, i.e., faculty, instructional, organizational, and personal development. Subsequently, the long- and short-term goals for staff development are enumerated. These goals provide for improved public relations and staff morale, as well as for personal and career improvement. A list of staff development activities is then presented, which includes tuition reimbursement, sabbatical leaves, mini-grants for curriculum development, travel, and seminars and workshops at MTCC. The paper concludes with a list of materials needed to support the program. (JP)
