Social Studies Curriculum Continuum. Grades K-8.
Cole, Richard, Ed.
A series of charts relating social studies skills to components for grades kindergarten through eight is presented. The document is divided into three major sections: grades kindergarten through two, three through five, and six through eight. Nine categories and related components are listed within each section: (1) content components include setting and focuses; (2) individual skills focus on acquiring, organizing, communicating, and using information; (3) group skills require organizing, operating, and an understanding of democratic principles; (4) historical methods include chronology, cause and effect, and resource validity; (5) geographic methods are location, symbols, map making, and map and globe types and terms; (6) political understandings involve controls, citizenship, government, and the nation-state; (7) economic understandings; (8) social understandings include individuals and groups, cultures, societies, and cultural diversity; and (9) environmental understandings are physical geography, land use, and ecological concerns. Components within each category are further broken down according to specific skills for each grade level. This format portrays the progression of skill and knowledge growth from one grade to the next and allows teachers to see skills and concepts taught before and after their own grade levels. (KC)
