Student Health: The Missing Link in the Referral Process.
Nivens, Maryruth K.
This monograph presents a model for team assessment of student learning problems which stresses the inclusion of all relevant parties in the assessment process and incorporates the frequently neglected factor of students' physical health. An eight-step intervention sequence is presented which includes: (1) listening to the student describe his or her problem, (2) observing the student at work, play, and rest in the home and at school, (3) conducting an initial conference among those who interact regularly with the student, (4) determining the initial remediation of the problem, (5) making a medical referral when necessary, (6) making accurate anecdotal materials available to the clinic, agency, or physician, (7) having the clinic or medical facility provide information to the patient and appropriate other adults, and (8) scheduling follow-up meetings with the original conference members and any additional specialists who might assist with the proposed remediation. Procedures and considerations for choosing, evaluating, and utilizing medical and psychological referral sources are described and a three-page form for evaluating these possible referral sources is included. Several case histories illustrating the eight steps in the intervention schedule are presented. (JMB)
