The eight chapters in this book are designed to present a rationale for a developmental reading program in the middle school and to provide middle school teachers with concrete suggestions for teaching reading. The first two chapters present an overview of middle school philosophy and the rationale for providing reading instruction at that level. The third and fourth chapters provide practical suggestions for the development of reading activities for students at different ability levels. Chapters five and six examine the various content areas of the middle school curriculum and suggest how teachers of these subjects can stress reading improvement. Chapter seven offers ways to increase recreational reading among students, and chapter eight discusses ways to evaluate reading programs. (FL)
