This document, prepared by the Evaluation System of the Public Schools of the District of Columbia, summarizes the results of analyses of factors affecting reading achievement for elementary students for the year 1976-77. It also provides comparisons with results obtained from analyses of the 1975-76 data. It includes the purpose and scope of the study, including objectives, data collection and data, limitations, and definitions; some benchmark characteristics of classes and reading programs including percentage of pretest and posttest reading objectives mastered, number of levels of prescriptive reading tests used in classes, class size, average absences of students, class holding rate, percentages of males and females, and types of reading programs; factors affecting the achievement of reading in classes; factors affecting interest in reading in classes; initial evaluation of selected types of reading programs; and conclusions, including reading achievement and testing, interest in reading, and evaluation of selected types of reading programs.
