Needs and Potentialities Assessment of Asian-American Elderly in Greater Philadelphia. A Project of the Mid-Atlantic Region Research Committee.
Peralta, Victorina; Horikawa, Herbert
The study reported on in this document was undertaken to develop a service delivery model that would accurately reflect the Asian-American's specific cultural needs, values, and traditions. The personal characteristics, economic conditions, and interests of 255 Asian-American elderly in the Philadelphia area are described. A needs assessment of this sample includes the following: (1) present financial assistance; (2) needed financial assistance; (3) senior citizen center knowledge and participation; (4) reasons for not joining a senior citizen center (e.g., language barriers, racial discrimination); (5) need for an Asian-American senior center; (6) the degree of awareness the sample has of homemaker services, in-home services, domiciliary care, adult foster care, meals on wheels, supportive counseling, food stamps, protective services, legal services, recreational services, educational opportunities, mental health services, employment services, housing, and transportation. It is argued that the data collected indicate a need for an Asian-American senior citizen center in Philadelphia. Tables of statistical data and a list of references are included. (EB)
