A review of the seminar proceedings on "The Realities of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child", held in Melbourne, Australia in May, 1978 is presented in this paper. The report contains the opening address and speeches on the following topics: (1) the rights of the child--myth or reality; (2) present social and judicial developments and practical problems pertaining to the principles presented in the 1959 United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child; (3) a reaction against child rights; (4) issues and policies concerning who's responsible for the rights of children in a changing society; (5) relationships between childhood socialization and the role of parents and the role of society; (6) major problems and differences affecting children's growth and development in both Third World and Western urbanized industrial countries; (7) rights, needs and demands of the individual child, the child's family and the state; (8) public policies for children; (9) children's rights and cultural diversity; (10) world hunger and the child; and (11) language development in children. Also included: a list of questions posed as guidelines for group discussion; the introduction to the plenary session of the seminar; a summary report of the seminar, and a bibliography of the rights of the child and the family.
