The early development, prebroadcast research, early production concepts, formative research, summative research, evolution of production, and promotion and outreach activities of "The Electric Company" (TEC) are presented. Conclusions discuss (1) the uncertainty of the future of TEC despite its success and positive reception as an educational innovation; (2) some immediate questions regarding promotional activities, funding, valuable products, and teacher utilization; and (3) steps which have been taken to begin to answer these questions.
