A Consumer's Guide to Sex, Race and Career Bias in Public School Textbooks.
Britton, Gwyneth; Lumpkin, Margaret
Containing quantitative analyses of 49 reading, literature, and social studies series, this resource guide is intended for use by parents and educators who are concerned with sex, race, and career role bias in elementary school textbooks. The eight chapters of the guide include the following: charts of major character role and career role assignments drawn from an examination of books from 26 publishers; documented evidence of continuing sexism and racism in textbooks despite the industry's pledges to eliminate bias from its products; a textbook analysis kit for parents and educators who wish to evaluate books; a discussion of the potential conflict of interest inherent in the industry practice of textbook evaluation by in-house or hired consultants; a recommendation that all textbook series be evaluated by outside, independent professionals; and a summons for nationwide sanctions to compel publishers to honor their own guidelines. Three appendixes contain a list of the textbook series analyzed, selected references, and organizations concerned with sexism and racism. (FL)
