Developed in West Virginia as part of a statewide effort to improve reading achievement through a competency based staff development program, this inservice instructional packet on comprehension is one of five designed to present classroom teachers with the essential competencies and learner outcomes involved in developmental reading. The materials in this packet aim specifically to help teachers develop a knowledge of comprehension skills, an assessment of comprehension skill development in learners through formal and informal test data, useful instructional strategies for reading comprehesnion, and the ability to evaluate instructional activities in terms of comprehension skill development. The packet also contains guidelines for conducting the inservice program; the gestalt, rationale, objectives, and schedule for the program; a self-evaluation record, transparencies on comprehension skills; and an evaluation record for the inservice program.
