This publication presents statistics on educational attainment and illiteracy by country, age, sex, and other characteristics where available. Data are derived from censuses and surveys carried out since 1945, supplemented by a limited number of estimates. Most of the basic data is taken from the "Demographic Yearbook Population Census" questionnaires collected by the United Nations Statistical Office. The text is presented in English, Spanish, and French. Data for over 200 countries/territories are contained in the document. (CSS)
