University Center and Community College Interaction: A Joint Degree Program. Final Report.
Shea, Brent; Stannard, Carl
This final report on the Joint Degree Program (JDP) describes a cooperative venture between Harpur College of the State University of New York at Binghamton and Broome Community College (BCC) under which Harpur students work simultaneously toward both a liberal arts bachelor's degree and a vocationally oriented associate in applied science degree. The historical development of the program, employment experiences and prospects for JDP students, institutionalization of the JDP, the planned cross-registration agreement, and transportation of students from one campus to the other are discussed. In addition, the report contains three appendices: an evaluation of the participants' attitudes toward the program, the JDP guidebook for students, and a copy of the current cross-registration agreement between the campuses. Although the JDP never intended to impact large numbers of Harpur students (the numbers were slightly smaller than originally anticipated), it has proven both educationally sound and cost effective. While extending the job opportunities of participating students, JDP has also allowed the schools to better provide other educational options for all students. The problems initially encountered by JDP students are discussed. (TR)
