Aimed at organizations of all sizes and types, this manual is intended to show methods for the most effective use of student volunteers of all ages in programs which will benefit both the volunteers and the community. Chapter 1 examines the nature of the student volunteer movement, the roles which students can assume, and the attributes of the student volunteers. The next six chapters give guidelines for program planning, implementation, and evaluation including the following: (1) assessing needs for volunteers and the extent to which students are likely to meet these needs; (2) developing effective volunteer programs and jobs by creating specific job descriptions, evaluation procedures, and methods of recognition; (3) locating and selecting volunteers whose interests and skills match the organization's needs; (4) supervising students by means of student-supervisor contracts, meetings, on-the-spot observation, daily reports, written logs, or intervention at the time of a specific problem; and (5) training volunteers, emphasizing the development of student leadership and the use of orientation programs. Chapter 8 discusses possible issues and problems such as academic credit, liability costs, transportation, scheduling, and removing the ineffective or troublesome student. In conclusion, chapter 9 supplies examples of specific projects either already operational or in planning. The appendixes contain a planning checklist and forms for planning, evaluation, and a volunteer agency agreement. (ELG)
