The Selection and Training of School Bus Drivers.
McKnight, A. James; And Others
This report describes procedures used in developing a set of selection requirements and training objectives for operators of school buses. The selection requirements include collection and interpretation of personal history and other background information, physical examination covering vision, hearing, handicaps, and general health, written knowledge tests covering general driving and school bus operations, an on-road performance test, and an attitude measure. Training objectives cover all aspects of school bus operation and are specified at three different levels. The selection requirements and objectives are based upon an analysis of the qualifications required for safe and effective operation of school buses. Sources of information include: (1) a review of related literature, (2) a systematic formal analysis of the school bus operator's task, (3) a comparison of the background characteristics of high- and low-rated operators, (4) the opinions of pupil transportation authorities as obtained through questionnaires and interviews, and (5) observations of and interviews with school bus operators.
