The High School Tour: A Study of the Asolo Theatre Tours of 1966-1968 and the Elon College Tours of 1969, 1970 and a Guide for High School Touring.
Moffett, Alexander Stuart
In 1966, the Asolo Theatre Festival, a professional, Equity repertory company, set up a pilot program for introducing live theatre to the teachers and students in the high schools of Florida. This project was carried out by three tours, two by the Asolo group of players and one by another group, the Elon Players between 1967 and 1970. These tours took the form of high school tours in which two different plays were presented to students and teachers. These tours presented a full day's program to the high schools visited, including morning instructional seminars and discussions, and afternoon productions of modern and classic plays. The object of this study was to compile a record of these four years of touring, the techniques developed, and the lessons learned; and to make this information available to anyone contemplating a similar effort. An investigation was made of these tours, their conceptions and implementations, with specific attention being paid to the content of the programs and the methods used. This study included: play choice, interpretation, and directorial approach; the companies, their formation and structure; data from all the technical areas; and a discussion of the seminars, instructional periods, and pre-tour meetings. A compilation of successful techniques and lessons learned was included in the form of a guide for high school touring. Appendices include data from the tours and a set of check lists. (Author/CK)
