Vroom's cognitive model, which proposes to both explain and predict an individual's level of work productivity by drawing on the construct motivation, is discussed and three hypotheses generated: (1) that Vroom's model does predict performance in a non-industrial setting; (2) that it predicts self-perceived performance better than measures externally derived; and (3) that a measure of self-rated expectancy improves the predicitve power of the model. All three hypotheses were confirmed on a sample of 33 members of a university wrestling team. Interviews and questionnaire were used to collect relevant data from team members and coaches.
