The history of the planning, funding, preparation of preliminary materials, teacher preparation, trial teaching, evaluation, revision and final publication of the CHEM Study materials is presented. The anecdotal account points out the difficulties encountered, the solutions found and the pitfalls avoided so that the experience gained may be useful to future curriculum developers. The appendices include lists of personnel; a bibliography of material published by and about CHEM Study; a list and description of films produced for the course, drafts of criteria for producing films as well as comments upon these criteria; and samples of the open-book examinations developed. Sample agendas of, and brief notes on, meetings held by the steering committee, contributors and evaluators, are also appended. A seven-page index is included. (AL)
