TRENDS IN THE ETHNIC COMPOSITION OF THE PUPIL POPULATION IN THE NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS, 1958-1964.

THIS STATISTICAL REPORT PRESENTS DATA ON THE ETHNIC COMPOSTION OF PUPILS IN NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THE ETHNIC GROUPS IN THE CLASSIFICATION ARE "NEGROES,""PUERTO RICANS," AND "OTHERS." THE ETHNIC COMPOSITION FIGURES AND CHANGES IN PUPIL REGISTERS ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR FORM FOR EACH BOROUGH AND FOR THE CITY AS A WHOLE. DATA ARE FURTHER REFINED TO SHOW THE COMPOSITION AND CHANGE IN ELEMENTARY, JUNIOR HIGH, ACADEMIC, AND VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS AND IN SPECIAL SCHOOLS. ONE SECTION OF THE REPORT PRESENTS THE TREND IN DISTRIBUTION OF PUPIL POPULATION BY INDIVIDUAL ETHNIC GROUP. AN ANALYSIS OF THE DATA SHOWS THAT FROM 1958 TO 1964 THERE WAS A CITYWIDE INCREASE IN NEGRO AND PUERTO RICAN PUPILS AND A DROP IN "OTHERS" IN ALL BOROUGHS EXCEPT RICHMOND. IN THE EXAMINATION OF DATA FOR EACH SCHOOL LEVEL IT IS NOTED THAT THERE WERE NEGRO AND PUERTO RICAN INCREASES AT ALL LEVELS, AND "OTHERS" DECREASED EXCEPT IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS AND SPECIAL SCHOOLS.
