THIS EXPERIMENT COMPARED MERITS OF FOUR COMBINATIONS OF AUDIO-ACTIVE, AND RECORD-PLAYBACK ARRANGEMENTS IN HIGH SCHOOL FRENCH LANGUAGE LABORATORIES FOR 120 SOPHOMORES MATCHED ON FIVE PREDICTIVE MEASURES. ACHIEVEMENT TEST SCORES, GRADES, AND RATINGS BY THREE INDEPENDENT JUDGES WERE STATISTICALLY ANALYZED. BEST PERFORMANCE WAS ACHIEVED BY THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP SPENDING 80 PERCENT OF THE TIME USING AUDIO-ACTIVE EQUIPMENT ONLY. IMPLICATIONS FOR OPTIMUM USE OF LANGUAGE LABORATORIES WERE DISCUSSED.
