TODAY'S CONCEPTS IN SCHOOL LIGHTING.
GIBSON, CHARLES D.
SEVERAL SCHOOL LIGHTING CONCEPTS ARE PRESENTED IN THIS ARTICLE. THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS--(1) NONCAPTIVE RESEARCH SHOULD BE CARRIED ON THROUGH COORDINATION BETWEEN RESEARCH AND APPLICATION SEGMENTS OF THE LIGHTING INDUSTRY, (2) COMMUNICATION AND JOINT EFFORT SHOULD PROVIDE THAT MAJOR AGENCIES INVOLVED IN THE APPLICATION OF LIGHTING DESIGN CRITERIA HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMMUNICATE WITH ONE ANOTHER DURING THE TIME SUCH CRITERIA ARE BEING FORMULATED SO THAT A COMMON AGREEMENT WITH ANY CRITERIA CAN BE CRYSTALLIZED THROUGH SUCH COMMUNICATION, (3) CONSIDERATION MUST BE GIVEN TO THE BASIC BUILDING DESIGN FACTORS OF THE SPATIAL, THERMAL, VISUAL, SONIC, AND AESTHETIC ENVIRONMENT, (4) BRIGHTNESS BALANCE SHOULD BE THE DOMINANT FACTOR IN LIGHTING DESIGN, (5) THE TASK SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION IN DETERMINING THE KIND AND AMOUNT OF LIGHT NEEDED FOR VISUAL PERFORMANCE WITH COMFORT AND EFFICIENCY, (6) OBJECTIVE MEASUREMENT SHOULD BE A NECESSITY IN DETERMINING WHETHER OR NOT THE SYSTEM CONFORMS TO ACCEPTED LEVELS AND BRIGHTNESS LIMITATIONS, (7) SEEING CONDITIONS CAN BE IMPROVED ECONOMICALLY IF CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE RELATIONSHIP OF TASK QUALITIES TO SEEING ACCURACY BY SCREENING PURCHASES OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, AND (8) SPEED AND ACCURACY ARE NOT THE ONLY CRITERIA WITH WHICH TO EVALUATE THE ADEQUACY OF A LUMINOUS ENVIRONMENT. FACTORS SUCH AS COMFORT, BEAUTY, SAFETY, SECURITY, FULL USE OF SPACE, ETC. ARE SIGNIFICANT TO THE TOTAL DESIGN OF ENCLOSURES. NEW RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE MORE VALID BASES FOR FURTHER APPLICATION CONCEPTS. THIS ARTICLE APPEARED IN THE JUNE 1965 ISSUE OF SCHOOL BOARD JOURNAL. COPIES MAY BE OBTAINED BY WRITING TO WILLIAM C. BRUCE, EDITOR, AMERICAN SCHOOL BOARD JOURNAL, 400 N. BROADWAY STREET, MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN. (RK)
