THIS HEBREW BASIC COURSE IS INTENDED AS A TRAINING MANUAL TO TEACH STUDENTS THE INFORMAL SPEECH OF EDUCATED NATIVE ISRAELIS AND IS DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH A NATIVE INSTRUCTOR AND TAPE RECORDINGS PREPARED FOR THIS COURSE. THE UNITS CONSIST OF BASIC CONVERSATION, ADDITIONAL VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR NOTES, REVIEW CONVERSATIONS, AND DRILLS ON VOCABULARY, VERBS, GRAMMAR, AND RAPID RESPONSE. BECAUSE EMPHASIS IS ON INTENSIVE PRACTICE OF GIVEN DRILLS, EXPLANATION OF HEBREW STRUCTURE IS KEPT AT A MINIMUM. NEW VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR, INTRODUCED IN THE BASIC CONVERSATION SECTIONS, IS PRESENTED IN ENGLISH, IN PHONEMIC TRANSCRIPTION, AND IN HEBREW SCRIPT. RESUMES OF THE BASIC CONVERSATIONS FROM UNIT 11 ON ARE GIVEN IN THE GRADED READINGS SECTION IN HEBREW SCRIPT ONLY. IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE STUDENT USING THIS TEXT HAS SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF LINGUISTICS.
