A SURVEY OF LANGUAGE SCHOOLS NOT UNDER ACADEMIC AUSPICES.
MUSTARD, HELEN M.
A SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED OF 93 SCHOOLS WHICH OFFERED FOREIGN-LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION IN 10 MAJOR CITIES. THESE SCHOOLS WERE SELF-SUPPORTING AND NOT INCLUDED IN SUCH ACADEMIC CATEGORIES AS COLLEGES, PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS, AND PRIVATE PREPARATORY SCHOOLS. INFORMATION ON THE STUDY OF LANGUAGES FOREIGN TO AMERICANS WERE GATHERED BY INTERVIEWS WITH EACH SCHOOL, AND THE INVESTIGATION WAS CONCERNED WITH ENROLLMENTS, CLASS SIZE, METHODS OF INSTRUCTION, AUDIOLINGUAL AIDS, AGE AND TYPES OF STUDENTS, AND SCHOOL AND TEACHING STAFF. THE FINDINGS INDICATED THAT--(1) ENROLLMENT HAD INCREASED BETWEEN 1955 AND 1960, (2) SPANISH, FRENCH, GERMAN, RUSSIAN, AND ITALIAN WERE THE MAIN LANGUAGES TAUGHT, AND (3) EASTERN STATES ENROLLMENT WAS LARGER THAN THE COMBINED ENROLLMENT OF THE SCHOOLS FROM OTHER REGIONS.
