A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF CERTAIN OCULOMOTOR SKILLS TO READING READINESS.
EFRON, MARVIN
A "READING EYE" CAMERA PHOTOGRAPHED THE EYE MOVEMENTS OF 46 KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN OF MIDDLE-RANGE INTELLIGENCE. MOVING TARGETS WERE USED IN ORDER TO MEASURE OCULOMOTOR SKILLS--(1) OCULAR MOBILITY OR FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT OF THE EYES, (2) ACCURACY OF FIXATION, AND (3) VISUAL CONVERGENCE AND FUSION. SCORES FROM THE METROPOLITAN READINESS TESTS, FORM R, WERE USED AS A MEASURE OF READINESS FOR READING. THE METROPOLITAN ACHIEVEMENT TESTS ALSO WERE ADMINISTERED IN THE LATTER HALF OF THE FIRST GRADE. A FORTRAN PROGRAM WAS USED TO CALCULATE PEARSON PRODUCT MOMENT CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OCULOMOTOR SKILLS OF CHILDREN OF MIDDLE-RANGE INTELLIGENCE AS MEASURED IN THIS STUDY, TO READING READINESS OR READING ACHIEVEMENT.
