The Merging of Literacy and Technology in the 21st Century: A Bonus for Gifted Education. Technology
Siegle, Del
Gifted Child Today, v27 n2 p32-35 Spr 2004
For most of the past century, literacy has been associated with being able to read the printed word. The meaning of literacy, however, is changing (Lankshear & Knobel, 2003). Not only are reading experts expanding their notion of literacy to include technology use (Leu, 2003), but it is included in literacy in other disciplines, as well (Burkhardt et al., 2003), and technology skills often cross disciplines. The skills that educators of gifted and talented students have been advocating for the past half-century are now on the fore front of the literacy movement. This article asserts that these skills must be embraced through technology. The Internet needs to be the primary focus as technology integration within classrooms is considered. Simply using technology in the classroom does not ensure that students are acquiring new literacies. Help must be given to young people in using the vast resources of the Internet to solve problems and achieve specific goals efficiently and effectively.
