The purpose of this study was to examine the status and trends of instruction in both keyboarding and speech recognition among public schools in a Midwestern state. A survey was sent to 490 members of the state business education association who returned 213 (62.5%) usable responses. The subjects represented schools from kindergarten to college. Results of the study indicate that keyboarding is taught in an overwhelming majority of schools. Based on the opinions of the respondents, the future of keyboarding is also predicted to remain strong with 165 (77.5%) respondents indicating they felt keyboarding will be used by almost everybody in 2015. When asked if speech recognition instruction was offered in their schools, 40 (18.8%) respondents indicated it was. When asked about future usage of speech recognition by 2015, 128 respondents (60.1%) indicated they felt it would be used by some people, while 53 respondents (24.9%) indicated they felt it would be used by most everybody.
