Young, James O.
This book is an examination of the ideas of black writers in a variety of political, economic, social, and cultural contexts during the depression years, focusing on published writings of the most prominent writers of the era. Chapters include "Aged Race Men," which examines the clash that occurred in the 1930s between older black leaders and the young intellectuals over race versus class and important forces in the lives of blacks; economics as "The Moratorium on Race"; "Variations on a Racial Theme"; "The Truth from Our Point of View," which discusses the view of history held by the new group of black intellectuals; "The Old, the New, and the Newer Negro," which explores the reaction of black intellectuals like Richard Wright to the subservient attitude that developed among black people during the Harlem Renaissance of the twenties; "Weavers of Jagged Words," which considers the increase of violent themes in the black literature of the depression years; and "Black Reality and Beyond."
