Test Review: Watson, G., & Glaser, E. M. (2010), "Watson-Glaser™ II Critical Thinking Appraisal." Washington State University, Pullman, USA

Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, v34 n6 p607-611 Sep 2016
The Watson-Glaser™ II Critical Thinking Appraisal (Watson-Glaser II; Watson & Glaser, 2010) is a revised version of the "Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal®" (Watson & Glaser, 1994). The Watson-Glaser II introduces a simplified model of critical thinking, consisting of three subdimensions: recognize assumptions, evaluate arguments, and draw conclusions. The target audience is global business professionals. Respondents are provided a series of passages or prompts that have been updated to reflect current business settings. The scores are to be used during the employee selection process, employee development purposes, or promotion decisions. Two shorter equivalent forms (D and E) have been constructed as revisions to Forms A and B, respectively. The revised forms reduce the question length in half, totaling 40 items each: 12 items for two subscales (Recognize Assumptions and Evaluate Arguments) and 16 items for one subscale (Draw Conclusions). Raw scores have limited use beyond ranking examinees. However, 13 updated norm groups by occupation, industry, and position level provide context and meaning for individual scores. Developers of the Watson-Glaser II used the theoretical framework (Glaser, 1937; Watson & Glaser, 1994) and exploratory factor analyses from previous versions to refine the factor model of critical thinking. A summary and commentary remarks of the reviewers are provided.
