Education in Summer: 100 Years at UW-Madison.
Wisconsin Univ., Madison.
College summer sessions, and specifically the summer program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison between 1885-1985 are discussed in two papers and a conference summary. In "History of Summer School at the University of Wisconsin," John W. Jenkins and Barry J. Teicher examine the emergence and nature of summer programs in the context of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's value and governance systems. Clarence A. Schoenfeld's paper, "The American University in the Summer Revisited," is a current reflection on university education in the summer and a followup to his 1967 paper, "The American University in a Summer." Included are reactions to the Schoenfeld paper by four educators, John R. O'Fallon, Ellen Elms Notar, Thomas S. McLeroy, and John Schmidt. Finally, Harland Samson summarizes conference discussions in "Summer Education in the Future," with attention to six topics: mission and goals of summer sessions; summer school governance and administration; delivery of instruction; innovation and experimentation; relationship of summer session to the academic year; and the role of the summer dean. Appended are descriptions of summer activities over the past 100 years for 13 schools or departments of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a chronology of important summer school events.
