Problem-Solving Test: Tryptophan Operon Mutants
Szeberenyi, Jozsef
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, v38 n5 p337-338 Sep-Oct 2010
This paper presents a problem-solving test that deals with the regulation of the "trp" operon of "Escherichia coli." Two mutants of this operon are described: in mutant A, the operator region of the operon carries a point mutation so that it is unable to carry out its function; mutant B expresses a "trp" repressor protein unable to bind tryptophan. Terms to be familiar with before starting to solve the test: tryptophan, operon, operator, repressor, inducer, corepressor, promoter, RNA polymerase, chromosome-polysome complex, regulatory gene, cis-acting element, trans-acting element, plasmid, transformation. (Contains 1 figure and 1 footnote.)
