Korean American Parents' Communication with European American Therapist during Behavioral Intervention Services
Park, Sungho
Education, v132 n3 p560-567 Spr 2012
Qualitative research method was employed in order to explore how Korean American parents of children with severe developmental disabilities and problem behaviors collaborate with European American service providers. Ten Korean American parents who received behavioral therapy from European American therapists participated in this study. Results of the study indicate that these parents are not likely to follow therapists' suggestions. Also, language barrier seems to be an important factor influencing how they develop partnership with professionals, but there were two parents who managed to work well with therapist despite the language barrier. Practical implications for therapists are provided.
