Organizational Security Threats Related to Portable Data Storage Devices: Qualitative Exploratory Inquiry
Cooper, Paul K.
ProQuest LLC, DM/IST Dissertation, University of Phoenix
There has been a significant growth of portable devices capable of storing both personal data as well as sensitive organizational data. This growth of these portable devices has led to an increased threat of cyber-criminal activity. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of security threats to the data assets of organizations that use portable data storage devices. This qualitative exploratory inquiry design study interviewed a study population of 20 organizational leaders whose companies use technology in their day-to-day business operations. The population was selected from organizations across the United States, including companies within the service, manufacturing, government, and military sectors, and comes from small, medium, and large organizations. Conclusions from this study were that smaller and localized organizations are deficient in the areas of information technology security processes and risk management policies which places these types of organizations at substantial data security breach risk. Staying current regarding electronic risks and challenges, enforcement of policies and regulations, having good damage control procedures and policies for smaller and localized organizations was also an important conclusion of this research. Additionally, it was concluded that a larger number of smaller and medium localized organizations needed better awareness and training as well as creation of detailed policies and procedures to help protect and make these organizations more secure. Further qualitative research that explores in more depth why employees of smaller and localized geographical organizations, who often perform non-technology work duties, are not trained adequately when it comes to data security and the use of portable storage devices is recommended.
