University-School Teacher Education Partnerships in North Carolina
Edelfelt, Roy; Coble, Charles
Journal of In-service Education, v30 n3 p443-462 Sep 2004
Prospective teachers spending a year in classrooms... Teachers and professors studying problems that teachers face every day... Teachers co-teaching methods courses with university professors... These are some of the exciting outcomes of university-school teacher education partnerships in North Carolina. Current interest in university-school collaboration in teacher education is high in the United States. The University-School Teacher Education Partnerships (USTEP) program, under way in North Carolina's 15 state-supported institutions that prepare teachers, is such a collaboration. The partnerships have been supported annually by the North Carolina legislature with $1.8 million (Coble, 1999a). The involved universities prepare roughly 70% of the teachers in the state each year. USTEP now is more than five years old, and we can begin to report some of its experiences, problems and successes. (Contains 1 note.)
