Content Matters: Building Vocabulary and Conceptual Understanding in the Subject Areas
Greenwood, Scott
Middle School Journal (J3), v35 n3 p27-34 Jan 2004
This article focuses on traditional vocabulary instruction that has often had pernicious side effects: drill and kill that turned kids off to reading and word study. This trend can be reversed through careful attention to the needs and predilections of students as well as conspicuous consideration of the ramifications of time-cost. Here, the author discusses the six vocabulary teaching strategies for the content area subjects and summarizes the key points about vocabulary and concept building. (Contains 5 figures.)
