Bullying as a Correlate of Dropout from School among Adolescents in Delta State: Implication for Counselling

The study investigated the relationship between bullying and dropout from school among adolescents, in Delta State. It also examined the prevalence of bullying among boys and girls. The survey method was adopted for the study. Two research instruments were used for the study, they are the instrument on bullying and the instrument on reasons for drop out from school. A sample of two hundred students were used for the study. These students were students who dropped out of school and re-enrolled in some institutes of Continuing Education in Delta State. 100 males and 100 females were used for the study. The data were analyzed using simple percentages. The result showed that bullying significantly determines dropout from school in Delta State because result showed that there is a significant relationship between bullying and drop out from school, in that the analysis of variance for the regression data produce an F-value of 59.971 which was found to be significant at p less than 0.05. The study also revealed that boys are more likely to bully other students when compared to the girls, 80% males and 85% of females indicated that boys are more likely to bully other students. It is recommended that behavioural counselling should be adopted in counselling students who are bullies and their victims with a view to helping them resolve some inter personal and emotional problems.
