Asiyai, Romina Ifeoma
Education, v134 n3 p305-315 Spr 2014
This study examined impediments to research among students of institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. The study was guided by one research question and three hypotheses. Data were collected from 600 final year students randomly selected from institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean to answer the research question while t-test was used to test the three hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings showed the factors that acted as impediments to students carrying research were interest related, training related, inadequate facilities, in addition to lack of ICTs and internet connectivity in institutions of higher learning. Undergraduates and postgraduates, male and female students, and state universities and federal universities students did not differ significantly in their opinion of the identified factors that acted as impediments to research. The study recommends that lecturers should adopt student-centered approach in teaching of research methods while government should encourage research by assisting in financing such researches.
