University Support of Secondary STEM Teachers through Professional Development
Beaudoin, Colleen R.; Johnston, Pattie C.; Jones, Leslie B.; Waggett, Rebecca J.
Education, v133 n3 p330-339 Spr 2013
Problems associated with recruiting, supporting and retaining quality teachers in the STEM areas have been well documented in the literature. Specifically, findings suggest STEM teachers have indicated a need for pedagogy and increased content knowledge. These needs may be attributed to the fact that more STEM teachers have been alternatively certified and are, therefore, less exposed to formal training in pedagogy and content. Recently, research has highlighted the value university faculty members may have in the support of STEM teachers. The purpose of this paper is to provide a template for university faculty members who may wish to provide support to teachers. The support provided in this effort includes securing a grant to fund week-long workshops for STEM teachers. This description may help those university faculty members who may want to review grant rationale and workshop design. Additionally, the workshop was evaluated by those attending teachers so that the university faculty members could discern critical aspects of needed training for STEM teachers. Results of the evaluation are described and suggestions for future efforts based on the results are included.
