Doing What We Want to Become: Preparing New Urban Teachers
Leland, Christine H.; Harste, Jerome C.
Urban Education, v40 n1 p60-77 Jan 2005
The shortage of competent, caring professionals who see themselves as urban educators has long been recognized as a problem that teacher preparation programs need to address. The authors argue that situating an entire elementary teacher education program in an urban school setting and engaging candidates in ongoing conversations about difficult social issues can make a difference in how graduates see themselves and how they judge their ability to succeed as the next generation of urban teachers.
