"Stationenlernen:" A Student-Centered Approach to Working with Foreign Language Texts
Redmann, Jennifer
Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, v38 n2 p135-151 Fall 2005
This article describes an approach to working with foreign language texts in the classroom, "Stationenlernen," that takes the ongoing development of students' foreign language literacy as a goal. "Stationenlernen" is a pedagogical method common in German elementary schools and readily adapted to the foreign language classroom. In this laboratory-like setting, students rotate between various stations, completing tasks related to an assigned text. The article outlines the origins of the "Stationenlernen" concept, as well as types of activities for use with a literary text. Specific examples of activities for Herbert Gunther's "Grenzganger" and Gerhart Hauptmann's "Bahnwarter Thiel" are provided.
