The Assessment Edict and the Love of Teaching
Ventello, Gregg Primo
Thought & Action, p57-60 Fall 2008
This article describes the feelings of faculty members required to annually design an assessment project for each semester and report to the director of assessment the objectives and results of that project on a standardized form. What is misunderstood is that true assessment is part of the very "fiber of being" for many faculty members. Based upon the Greek, "Eros"--the force that pulls toward everything good, true, and beautiful--teachers assess their teaching on some level throughout their professional day. A continual pushing of themselves to be better at what they do is part of the concern with how they use their time. The better and most useful assessment comes from an evaluator with expertise in the content area. Teachers have chosen a path that promises neither material reward nor prestige. They teach because their profession fulfills them in ways that are often hard to measure or articulate, in ways that can't be boiled down to what can be counted. Instead, they do what has been asked of, submit an assessment report for every semester, neatly filed away in chronological order, and realize that fighting it is not worth jeopardizing a job in which one gets to do what one loves to do.
