On February 1, 2015, the New England Patriots clinched a 28-24 point win against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX. Going into the game, the Patriots were shrouded in controversy regarding possible deflated footballs in their American Football Conference (AFC) Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts, most notably known as "DeflateGate." The footballs used by the New England Patriots in this game were alleged to be underinflated by as much as two pounds per square inch per National Football League (NFL) rules. Having an underinflated football can provide an unfair advantage, as it is believed they can be better gripped, thrown, and caught because the ball is more malleable. The investigation continues as the NFL gathers the required information to determine if the rules were indeed broken. This article explores the process used to make official NFL footballs and how they are measured within the NFL's guidelines prior to games. The authors also explore one theory on how temperature may have contributed to the deflation of the now infamous "DeflateGate" game in January 2015.
