Biomedical and robotic technologies are merging to present a wonderful opportunity to develop artificial limbs and prosthetic devices for humans injured on the job, in the military, or due to disease. In this challenge, students will have the opportunity to design a store or online service that specifically dedicates itself to amputees. Described here are ways students can use principles and skills taught in technology and engineering education to develop a concept for a very specialized store where amputees might go for all their needs. This is a most unusual classroom challenge, but a realistic look at what it might be like to start a business for a very special market. The kinds of questions asked about this new business are really not so different from a conventional product/service market. Students can get really involved and see how businesses are not just about making money, but addressing real customer needs.
